The summer vacation is just around the corner, and the routes to the Adriatic, Western Europe, or Scandinavia are already programmed into the new Chargeprice route planner. But as soon as you cross the border, many EV drivers face entirely new questions: Do charging stations abroad work the same way as at home? How do I pay there, and which apps make sense?

Anyone traveling across Europe quickly realizes that not all charging stations are created equal. The differences in infrastructure can be surprising.

When traveling to another country, you often encounter a mix of familiar and new systems. Today, the barriers are rarely on the technical side, but rather in the way you authorize and pay for the charging process.

1. The Payment System Jungle

• • App and RFID Card: In Western and Central Europe, access via charging card or app is the standard. But beware: not every domestic card is accepted at every foreign station (keyword: roaming).

  • Credit Card and Cash: Although EU regulations require newer fast chargers to have card terminals, you will often look for them in vain at older stations or in certain regions. Direct payment with cash is practically impossible at charging stations anywhere.

  • QR Codes & Websites: You will often find QR codes on regional stations for direct payment via a mobile browser. While this almost always works, it requires you to re-enter all your credit card details every time on what is often a foreign-language website.

2. Global Giants vs. Regional Champions

On European highways, you can reliably count on the major, paneuropean charging networks (like Ionity, Fastned, or Tesla). However, as soon as you leave the main traffic arteries to explore your holiday destination, local E-Mobility Providers (EMPs) take over. These regional providers often have the best local coverage, but they are not necessarily connected to the large roaming networks.
